Museum Day

since i wasnt feeling well at all yesterday i decided that i wanted a day to sleep in to get some extra rest. well it was well worth it because today i feel so much better! my throat doesnt hurt at all and i have a lot more energy than i did yesterday. i think i just needed some extra time to recuperate since we have been busy busy since the day we have gotten here. we are gone all day long doing stuff, i go to bed late and then get up early and i have been doing that for three weeks straight, so i think it all just hit me the past day or two. so today i didnt get out of bed till 10! yikes, first time sleeping that late since i have gotten here. but in my defense: number one-- i explained in the above, i needed time to rest and number two-- my alarm clock fell off my bed during the night so i had no idea what time it was until m'kynzi finally came back in the room. but even though we had a late start today it was very productive, enjoyable and a lot of fun.

our first stop was Westminster abbey. the only thing i remembered about westminster on our last trip was that the floor was covered with dead people, so every time i took a step i stepped on someone dead. well that hadnt changed, i still stepped on dead people. but this time around i was able to enjoy the beautiful sites. i dont know if they had this last time but now they have audio tours for free (well free after we pay the 9 pound to get in). the audio tour tells you were to go throughout the cathedral and tells you interesting facts about the kings and queens and people that have been buried there. the church is beautiful and so massive that again i had the same feelings from yesterday--that its so astonishing to me that a cathedral of such stature was able to be built so many years ago. except it wasnt the best decision to go to westminster after going to the Salisbury cathedral yesterday, because it was just as beautiful and less crowded which made it more enjoyable. but it was still great nonetheless. the architecture is absolutely incredible. i loved one of the rooms, it was a small cathedral that was in the process of being restored. the tile is the original tile from the medieval period and they are going through each tile and fixing it and covering it with protect coat on it. i just loved that. i decided that i would love to do that. it would be so incredible to restore and work on preserving historical items and artifacts. i just dont know quite how to figure out how to get into that. any ideas? the other amazing thing about this room was that the walls had originally paintings on it too that were deteriorating but were also trying to be restored. so phenomenal. unfortunately no pictures allowed in westminster, but when M'kynzi and i were in the cloisters outside we snapped a few pictures. and towards the end right before we were about to leave i convinced M'kynzi to take a few pictures secretly. what were they going to do? throw us out? i felt like the devil whispering in her ear, it was funny.

our next stop was lunch. we found this sandwich place called pickles that we thought would be good, relatively inexpensive and fast. well the food was alright but after we left we figured that the guys ripped us off. it was a very weird system. we ordered our food and they told us to go sit down and we pay later. so after we ate we went up to them to pay and they just totalled our cost in their heads and they definitely added on a pound or two to our meals but we didnt realize till after. it kinda sucked.

then we went to the Churchill Museum and War rooms--which i didnt even know existed. it was so amazing. the war rooms are an underground secret rooms that the cabinet members met in during WWII. They were secret rooms that were extra protected in case of bombing. It was made up of a cabinet room where most meetings were held with Churchill and other dignified politicians of the day, a telephone room were Churchill was able to make phone calls to the US presidents on a secure line, a map room were they logged where ships where, and bedrooms were all the men slept. the coolest part of the war rooms is that most of them (the cabinet room in particular) are laid out in the exact way that these men left them in. after the war ended the war rooms were simply left, locked up and forgotten about. and when they were rediscovered they were found exactly they way they were left. in the map room it was obvious that it was the actual map that was used to trace the allies and axis movements. and the room in which Churchill lived in is made up completely of all the things that were in his room at the time. it was a very interesting place to be since it was basically a bomb shelter that men like Churchill lived out of secretly during the war. all of the British war affairs were controlled from these war rooms. and its just crazy that they were forgotten about and then rediscovered many years later just how they were left. the other part of the war rooms is the Churchill Museum. Wow. so amazing, it isnt the largest museum--it was only one floor--but it felt huge! there was so much information in that museum, and dad you should be happy to know i read everything! M'kynzi and i spent so much time in there! It felt like we were in there for like 5 hours. It was a whole museum dedicated to his life, so we read things about his childhood and upbringing, his early political life and then his years as the prime minister, as well as things about his personal life. i walked out of that place feeling like Winston Churchill was my best friend. At the end there was a place that displayed questions about his life followed by the answers--i got the first 5 questions right. i was pretty proud of myself. Cathy and Lillie were with us but M'kynzi and I were taking so long that they left us there. Some interesting things i discovered was that a relative of ours made him his favorite breakfast table that he ate off of everyday. well, i dont know for sure if he was a relative but his last name was robins, so im just assuming. but the story gets better--the guys name was robbie robins. Man! that could have been me! if only i was a boy and dad had his way with the name. Another really cool thing was that Churchill was giving honorary citizenship in the US. The best part of it is that the letter granting him his citizenship showed Churchill's address to be 28 Hyde Park Gate---I live at 37 Hyde Park Gate! I live just around the corner from where Winston Churchill lived and died. When M'kynzi and I walked home today we found his house and outside there is a plaque saying that he lived there. we were very excited.

well after m'kynzi and i spent our whole lives at the Churchill museum we finally decided to go to Harrod's. WOW. that place was way too crazy for me, i coulndt handle it for very long. its the craziest place though. it is way nice. even the escalators are amazing looking--they had this Egyptian theme, it was bizarre. i wanted to take a picture of it but i felt weird. we went to the designer parts of the store (well i think there is only designer parts of the store) and we were at ralph lauren and there was a jacket that was almost 2,000 pound! and like i said to m'kynzi--thats not even converted to dollars!!! so we definitely felt out of place, and looking at ridiculous overpriced designer clothes that arent even that cute, gets old. so we spent less than an hour there. then we came home for a bit and then the "terrible quad" (as cathy dubbed us) went out for dinner. we decided once we got to london that we have set things for certain days--we have sunday picnics, monday dessert night, wednesday walks and friday dinners. its the one night where we finally get to go out and eat. so this friday we went to an Indian restaurant thats really close to our flat. we were sold on this one cause we got 10% off for being students. it was great! ive had indian food before in provo and wasnt the biggest fan of it but tonight it was great. and i had lots of fun with the fab four (as i said we should be called) we had lots of laughs. the best was when cathy flinged a pea at m'kynzi, or when m'kynzi said she needed washcloths. good times. the hardest part of dinner was trying to figure out what the waiters said to us, it was way to hard to figure that out.

so in all it was a really good day. we got in some great sightseeing and was able to do lots of things, even though we didnt leave the flat till about noon. tomorrow i think we are going to hit him either a medieval fair or covet gardens. not really sure yet.

Day in the WB

Today we spent all day on the West Bus, or the WB as M'kynzi and i liked to refer to it--mostly in reference to her hometown of West Bountiful. We had to get up super early today because our bus was leaving metro gate at 8.00 sharp. but luckily i took some great naps on the bus to and from all of our site seeing stops. I slept the first hour and a half as we drove to our first stop of the day -- Jane Austen's house. Unfortunately i am not a fan of Jane Austen or i would have been more impressed and in awe of being there like most other girls were. But it was very interesting, and a very cute quaint home. The biggest downfall of the day was that i woke up with a sore throat. And the biggest problem is that a couple of girls have come down with strep throat--so its definitely been going around. So i havent been feeling the best, and on top of that it was a cold and overcast day. Well we walked around the house and the most exciting thing was that Jane Austen's moms middle name is Leigh. i liked that. but then i was reading some of the things in the house and i came across another name, a Mrs. Leigh Porter. so i was excited that there were two instances of the name leigh. but then i saw a Mr. Leigh Porter. ya so the husbands name was definitely leigh and they referred to the wife as the Mrs Leigh. i was very hurt that i had a mans name. the most impressive part of the house was the garden. it was beautiful, M'kynzi and i walked around for a while snapping lots of pictures outside. and then because it had started to rain i had my umbrella out and i accidentally hit my camera against the handle and put it big mark on my camera. i was so bummed. definitely put a damper on my day. then because of the coldness we stopped into Cassandras Tea Shop across the way for some hot cocoa. such a good decision. it was a really cute tea parlor and so i got hot chocolate and a scone. it was nice to drink something warm. and there was a lot of people from our group that went in there too. we kinda took over the place. we kinda have that affect where ever we go.

Our next stop was Sailsbury's Cathedral. Absolutely beautiful. It was built in the 13th Century and it was astonishing. It was completely mind boggling that something that massive and beautiful could be built so long ago. We were able to walk around and take pictures and then listen in to a tour group for some school kids that were getting a tour in the choir seats, so a man was demonstrating on the organ. i took a video of it so that i could have the song. then we stopped into the restaurant and then we were all going to go see the magna carta until my friends ditched me!...well it was kinda an accident. Cathy and I left to to the bathroom and M'kynzi and Lillie were waiting for us. Somehow Cathy and I ended up going to different bathrooms so we got separated and then M'kynzi and Lillie decided to leave us because they figured we were together. so i ended up being ditched! and was by myself for a little bit. but it was right before we had to get back on the bus, so i just wandered outside for a bit until i ran into Cathy--so ended up not being bad, but i liked to bring it up to M'kynzi for the rest of the day since it was funny.

Then we got back on the bus and drove to our last destination of the day-- Stonehenge. It was really cool to actually see that place that is so famous. but i will admit that it is kinda ridiculous, almost anti-climatic. to go see a big thing of rocks out in the field. but i stand by my statement from before that its just something that you have to see. We all got in for free but paid money for the audio tour where we had to hold dorky handsets and listen to a bunch of facts. it was kinda hard to listen to them while we were all walking around taking pictures and trying to talk to one another. and plus i did a presentation on Stonehenge in our prep class this past semester so i felt like i already understood most of the history of the place. the best part of the audio tour was that you could select to listen to the myths of stonehenge...some of which include that king arthur brought the stones, the devil bought them from some old lady and that maybe aliens carried them over. really funny. then we got back on the bus for the drive back to london. this time i was able to stay awake and Lillie and i were able to have a good conversation on our way back. we shared lots of good stories about missionaries. so it was good to talk about lots of stuff.

after we got back to our flat i made myself some good pasta for dinner and then hung out for a bit. i wasnt sure what i wanted to do since i wasnt feeling the best. it kept going back and forth--sometimes i was feeling fine and then i felt like crap. but after hanging out for a bit i decided we should go out. so lillie and i decided to go for a walk. we walked all around kensington and i decided once again that i want to live here forever. i think it would amazing to have a nice flat in kensignton and live a business woman lifestyle. i often find myself thinking about the shopaholic (i cant remember her name), i want to live like her, mostly so i can fall in love with luke brandon (definitely didnt forget his name). i think it would be so fun to have a nice apartment in the big city and then also have a home out in the country. sounds like a great idea. i definitely took lots and lots of pictures today. it was nice to get out and actually site see instead of just going to class and being in our small area of town most of the time. and it was nice to be with the rest of the group. we never do group activities besides going to class, so it was fun to be with everyone else. tomorrow we are going to Westminster Abby and then to Harrod's for shopping! well window shopping.

you guys should look into that...laura you might have a future as a tour guide.

The Globe

Today started out with snoozing and showering, getting ready and eating my new fave for breakfast--sainsbury's amazing yogurt with cereal. cathy and i then headed up to class for the day. today we learned about the influence Christianity had on the english language. all very interesting. i really like the history aspect of the class, it helps tie things together with european history. i really like it. then i had to give my dialect presentation. i loved the fact that i gathered my information for this presentation the night before and it only took me about 20 mins to compile. abby did a great job too, i covered the history aspect of the liverpudlian dialect and she talked about the linguistics and sounds of the dialect. basically the accent of liverpool is a melting pot of irish, welish and scotish accents because it has always been a port city and an immigration city. so lots of people have come through that town which has affected the way they talk over there. im glad that i have done both my dialect and book presentation. two big things i get to check off the assignment sheet for this class.

we got out of class early today because we saw the play Merry Wives of Windsor at the Globe Theater. The show started at 2 and class usually goes till 1, but today don let us out at about 12.30. since we already packed a lunch we decided to just go over straight to the globe and hang out around there before the show started. so we got on the tube, got off at blackfrairs and crossed the millennium bridge. it is such an amazing bridge and its super windy while crossing it as you can tell by the picture! it is even more fabulous at night cause it lights up. then we just walked around outside before it was time to go in. we werent able to get group tickets for the show so we had scattered seats around the theater but cathy, m'kynzi and i were able to grab a set of 3 seats together. the globe theater is really amazing. its beautiful and it was a perfect day to watch a play in a semi out door theater. and we scored good seats cause we were on the top row of our section so we got to rest our backs against the wall instead of just being on a bench. the only downfall is that i sat basically right in front of a pole, so it kinda blocked my view. but it wasnt too bad. as soon as the play started i was utterly confused. with the old Shakespearean language, the accent and talking fast--i could not understand anything. i realized that listening to american accents you can get away with half listening and still process what is being said. not here. i have to concentrate really hard to catch conversation. and it didnt help that i still suffer from the "everytime i sit down i fall asleep" syndrome that a lot of us are still going through. so i fell asleep at some parts during the play, but it started to get good towards the end of the first half, and it was funny, so it helped me stay awake. and the second half was good, especially after cathy explained the play to me during intermission. before we went to the play don told us that the merry wives kinda reminded him of Lucy and Ethel, and he was so right. they merry wives of windsor are big jokesters playing tricks on the people around them. and they were super fun to watch, my favorite part of the play was at the end because all of the actors came out and did a little jig and sang a merry song. i really wanted to jump down there and dance and sing with them. the song was all stuck in our heads after that.

the play got out at about 4.30, and it was kinda cold out so we werent too motivated to do much. cathy, m'kynzi and i were going to go to harrod's but while on the tube just decided to go home. i came home and did some homework that i have been meaning to do, so that was nice to get it out of the way. i like it when we are home cause we hang out in the family room with rachel who is absolutely hilarious. so always has us cracking up. and todd was over too which is always nice. i made myself some yummy dinner and then as i was talking to laura on gmail she told me that i needed to get out. so i started to feel some guilt that i wasnt out in the city so i suggested to m'kynzi that we go get dessert. man, she is a sucker for dessert. she cant ever turn down chocolate!! so we decided to go to this crepe place that is just down by the south kensington tube stop that we walk by every once in awhile. best decision ever. it was a beautiful night out so it felt great to walk around. and the crepe place was amazing! a little on the expensive side--i kept trying to not convert the pound to dollars! i got a crepe with white chocolate, strawberries and whipping cream. the crepes were huge! and so at first m'kynzi and i thought that we would eat half of it and then bring the rest home for breakfast tomorrow. ha. ya right. as soon as we dug in we knew we would eat the whole thing. and i did. i was very greatful for the walk back home so that i felt like i could get in some exercise after downing that whole thing. so that was really fun to go there. we definitely want to go back. and it was nice to just hang out with m'kynzi, since we usually are always with a couple other girls it was nice to just hang out the two of us and talk a bit more. tomorrow we are off on a day trip to all over england. we are hitting up a bunch of different sites, one of which is stonehenge which im excited to see! i know its just a bunch of rocks, but still, its a must see.

Tower of London

im very pleased to say that today lillie and i got up at 8 this morning and went on a run through hyde park. i was so impressed with myself. i wasnt really looking forward to going, but i didnt want to go the whole SA without working out after making the effort to bring my work out clothes--which takes up space and weight in my suitcase which is very valuable to me. so we left and it was great, i wasnt so out of shape than i thought i was. we also kinda got lost in hyde park which was kinda interesting. its so massive and we just got turned around a bit. but it was ok cause it didnt make our run any longer. so we came back to the flat and got ready for class. while getting ready i burned the carpet into my hair. i had turned the straightener on and put it on the carpet and it burned the carpet. so when i put the straighnter on my hair i got red and black melted carpet in my hair. i freaked and ran to the kitchen but it basically came right out. still it was pretty funny. class was really enjoyable today. its just so laid back and today i felt like it was more interesting. its like a dream class cause we go to lecture and learn and discuss different things, yet have like no homework or assignments. its how all classes at school should be, it just makes it so much more enjoyable. an example of how laid back it is: im suppose to do a presentation on the liverpudlian dialect with this girl abby, well we thought it wasnt until thursday but in class don asked us if we were going to present today, we said we werent ready so he was just like "ok thats fine, you can do it tomorrow." And another aspect of the class that i like is that i know everyone. i just kinda sat back in class today i realized that i was friends with everyone in the room--which never happens at normal classes at BYU. so that makes it more fun. we also had a guest lecturer today--Dr. Laura Wright from Cambridge University. She talked to us about the english language of the 18th century, mainly focusing on the language used in like shops. i really liked it. she was great to listen to too. her voice was just calming and relaxing and it like almost put me to sleep. haha, not cause it was boring but just nice to listen to.

after class we went straight to the tower of london. we all packed ourselves food so that we didnt have to go home or buy food for lunch today. so i ate my food at the tube and as we were walking there. even though we tried to avoid spending money m'kynzi had to make a stop at ben's cookies before we left for the tube station. and because her and cathy were getting cookies i had to get one too. we discovered ben's cookies our first day in london. which is a good thing and a bad thing. they are incredible. (actually dad, when i say they are incredible i mean they arent very good at all) in dublin we were obsessed with the queen of tarts and in london we are obsessed with ben's cookies. we find ourselves taking about getting a cookie there almost everyday. so i enjoyed a white chocolate macademia nut cookie. what a surprise huh? so then we got to to the tower and were right on time for a tour by the beefeaters. our warden was very funny and really interesting. its great that i already sorta understand the things he is telling me just from what i have learned in school and from being here. then we went straight for the crown jewels. its interesting being here again, for the first time i would notice something that jogged a memory from when i was here the first time. but the only thing i remembered about seeing the crown jewels was that it was amazing, very blue and that we walked on moving belt. but it was amazing. we went down one side of the jewels and then decided we needed to go on the other side to see the jewels from both sides. we also saw the biggest punch bowl ever created--it was HUGE and completely gold of course. and there was an amazing salt shaker that was like half of my size. then we went into the white tower to see like the weaponry, but it wasnt as cool as i was expecting and it was super hot in there so it wasnt enjoyable. and thats when i started to see things that i remembered from our last trip. it wasnt anything big but i just rememberd a certain wall that was by the ravens and i just remember sitting by it on our last trip. so that was kinda exciting. i tried to search for the torture chamber but i couldnt find it. i think laura and kelly made that part up cause they wanted to leave me there and force me to eat mashed potatoes. then we walked out of the tower to see the tower bridge. i tried to take a picture to recreate the one of my kelly and laura where we sat on the bench and pretended not to see mom and dad, but i couldnt quite remember what it looked like. then we went over to buy some fish and chips. m'kynzi said they were the best in london. but after we bought them she said that the chips are the best and that last time she got them she didnt eat the fish. but it didnt matter cause it was amazing! it was only my second time eating fish and chips but it was so good! best fish ever. i definitely want to hit that up again.

after we ate we went up to st. pauls cathedral to witness the evensong. we did that because it is an elective site for our class and if you go to the church at evensong then you get in for free! so kinda like kill two birds with one stone. it took us like 20 mins to walk there, but we didnt want to be late so we walked so fast! and it was so hot today so it was not that enjoyable. but we eneded up making it right one time. so the church is absolutely gorgeous! it is so big and beautiful! i definitely wished that i could remember more things that i learned from my medieval class because we learned all about the symbolism of cathedrals but now i can barely remember anything. evensong was interesting. they read a few verses and we listened to the choir sing (which we had to stand while they were singing--so not fun) and then listen to them pray. during one of the sermons i took a little nap--very enjoyable. it was just interesting that i felt nothing in that church. you could definitely tell that they spirit was not there. i actually almost had a worried or unerving feeling while i was there cause i knew what they were saying and how they were worshipping just wasnt right. so evensong lasted about an hour, and after that we just decided to go home. we were all pretty tired from being out all day in the hot sun and on top of that i needed to get home and work on my dialect presentation--which only took about 20 mins to put together. thank goodness for wikipedia. but we had to take the central line to get home and it was SO packed! i dont know whats worse: rush hour freeway traffic or rush hour tube traffic. i vote the tube traffic. it is gross to be smashed in between strangers on a hot, stuffy small space. we were like sandwhiched inbetween too many sweaty people and we were getting sweaty too. so not enjoyable. and we also have to put up with crazy euopeans checking us out. m'kynzi had this creeper staring at her the whole time we were on the tube! it was so ridiculous. i swear we get so many people either checking us out or saying something to us as we walk by on the street. crazy euros. and least its not as bad here as it was in ireland. they are so much worse! . but once we got home we have all just being sitting around our family room on our computers all night. kinda sad, but a much needed rest after being busy busy all the time. well i dont have too many pictures to put up because my camera died during the day so m'kynzi had to use her camera to take picutres of me and im too lazy to get them from her now. ill probably put them up tomorrow. ok its not letting me put up pictures, you will have to wait until tomorrow.

im swallowing my pride

today was an amazing day. it was absolutely beautiful! i was finally able to wear one of my summer dresses that i bought. after the first few days in london i was afraid that i would be stuck in jeans and shoes all summer due to the rain. well today we had class again. its great not having class thursday-saturday, it makes it seem like class last week was forever away. for class we were suppose to read two different books--one was an elective history book that we chose and the other one is assigned. the one that we selected we are suppose to read it and then do a short presentation on it. i hated my book! it was so boring. i tried so hard to read that thing but i could only last a few pages before i got bored and would fall asleep. especially before i left for london i could not bring my self to read that thing. but i made about half way and on saturday i discovered that i was suppose to do my presentation today! i thought it was pretty humorous. so after i learned that i skipped to the last chapter and then took a few notes and some interesting facts i found throughout that book. so today in class i gave my presentation and no one even knew that i have only read half of it and that i hated it too! i was happy that i was able to pull that off. class today wasnt too bad. we started off with the history class which is great, we went over the medieval ages which i loved! im glad i took my medieval class last year, it was probably one of my most favorite classes that i have taken in college. but then we had our varieties of english class and that one sucked. we went over old english today--about verbs and nouns and pronouns. i dont even understand verbs in regular english, let alone old english! but im just glad that don wont be grading us too hard. during class we got tickets to go to the tower of london, and we were planning on going but since we needed to go grocery shopping and be back for wicked we decided to wait and go tomorrow when we dont have a time constraint.

so instead of going there, cathy, m'kynzi, lillie and i decided to go to portobello road! so fun! well we got there and it took us forever to get to the main shops and markets on portobello road but it was still fun to walk down it and see cute houses. i was tempted to buy a few things but resisted. im afraid that my stingy-ness and inability to make decisions might cost me with coming home without too much. but i did buy some good fruit from one of the stands. then we went home and went to the best place ever--sainsbury's to go grocery shopping. we looked so ridiculous going to the grocery store because we bring our back packs so we can load up our food in there when we have to walk all the way home. but i got some good food, and better food so i dont have to only eat pb&j sandwiches. then we came home in time to eat and off to see WICKED.

so im swallowing my pride and saying it...i LOVED it instead of denying it. i know i have had apprehensions and said i never wanted to see it but i was so good! i just got back about an hour ago from the show. it was at the Apollo Theater, so not so far away. and we had AMAZING tickets. i dont know how with such a big group we got such good seats but we did. i was sitting on the 10th row and just off to the left of the stage. the set, costumes, and music were all so amazing! the lady that played the wicked witch had the best voice that i have ever heard, it literally gave me chills when she sang. the only annoying part about it was that i didnt like about the play was that they made glenda be so dumb and annoying. i love her in the movie and think she is so pretty and wonderful, and they kinda ruin that in the play. another thing i loved about the play was the guy that played the prince was so hot!! i loved watching him dance and sing. i wish i could fall in love with him. i really was hoping that the actors would come out so we could see them afterwards cause i wanted my picture taken with him, but unfortunately that didnt happen. so i am really glad i saw it and can finally understand why my roomies were obsessed but i dont think i will be as crazy about it as they were. we found out today that we are getting spending money to see a play, so i think we are going to see les miserables next week. i also want to see either hair spray or mama mia.

another funny thing that happened today is that we stole magazines. haha. we were walking to class and there was a huge stack of magazines like vogue, harpers bazaar etc just sitting outside next to all of this trash. so we picked up a stack before and after class. it is great to have them around so we can read it while we eat. that reminds me--even though our flat isnt the greatest, we live in such a nice area of london. we live right next to a bunch of embassies and there are always nice cars parked outside. like mercedes, bmw, audi and any other nice car you can think of. so with that and the fact that our maid came today and cleaned our whole flat i feel like i am living a posh lifestyle in london. i think that is all for today. all day long i think of all these things that i want to write down, but by the end of the day i forget it all. i guess i should be writing it down as i think of it. well tomorrow we have class and then we are going to hit up the tower of london and westminster abbey. im very excited for that, especially the crown jewels. i remember that that was amazing.
